‘GreaterParticipation for a Stronger Democracy’

Systematic Voters’Education and Electoral Participation program, better known as SVEEP, is theflagship program of the Election Commission of India for voter education,spreading voter awareness and promoting voter literacy in India. Since 2009, wehave been working towards preparing India’s electors and equipping them withbasic knowledge related to the electoral process.

SVEEP’s primary goal is to build a truly participative democracyin India by encouraging all eligible citizens to vote and make an informeddecision during the elections.The programme is based on multiplegeneral as well as targeted interventions which are designed according to thesocio-economic, cultural and demographic profile of the state as well as thehistory of electoral participation in previous rounds of elections and learning thereof.

We are always looking forward to achieving the aim of building astronger democracy through greater synergy with Civil Society Organisations,Media and Corporate Houses and even greater queries, suggestions, andparticipation from individuals.

Electoral LiteracyClubs

What are ELCs

An Electoral Literacy Club is aplatform to engage school students through interesting activities and hands-onexperience to sensitise them on their electoral rights andfamiliarise them with the electoral process of registration and voting. ELCsare also present in colleges and rural communities. 

At ELCs, learning meets fun. Activitiesand Games are designed to stimulate and motivate students provoking them tothink and ask questions. Through ELC, Election Commission of India, aims atstrengthening the culture of electoral participation among young and futurevoters.

 

Who shall be the members of ELCs?
ELCs are present in Schools, Colleges and Rural Communities. Followingwill be the members in each type of ELC – 

  • Schools : Students from Class IX – XII; 14-17 year olds
  • Colleges : 18 – 21 year olds
  • Rural Communities (Chunav Pathshala) :  All members of the village

 

What shall we do in ELCs

In the ELCs, members will be part of interesting and thought-provoking,mostly classroom based activities and games. There are around 25 suchactivities and 6 games which have been carefully designed to impart specificlearning which will help them become an ‘Empowered (Prospective) Voter’.

 

How can a School/College enrol for the ELC?

The School/College can approach the following:

  1. District Collector who is also the District Election Officer (DEO)
  2. Electoral Registration Officer(ERO)
